It’s just been treated gingerly, being an item that’s deserving of gentleness. & that, of course, reminds me of a song/poem I wrote to sing to newborn babies & onward throughout their childhood to build children’s respectful care for & with all things, living or not. Ah, touching is one of those 5 all-important senses (touch, see, hear, smell, taste) we each use every minute of living as we explore our world. Indeed, babies touch to learn, & just as soon as they touch/grab/pull at most things, we tend to stop them with words “No” or “Don’t touch” or with our actions to remove them or to remove the item from Baby’s reach. BUT…What happens if we teach babies from birth to touch gently, instead? I can tell you from years of experience: babies/children learn to touch gently & to respect everything, living or not. It works like magic, & when it’s shared in song, it begs repetition & then, well, the message not only stays with the child throughout their lives, it stays with us, the messenger. & we no longer separate children from things, things from children.
