The influence of Quaker motifs can be found on samplers taught at many locations. The Ackworth School founded in 1779 in Yorkshire England, the York School (1785) in York, England, & in the Westtown School (1799) in Chester County, Pennsylvania. The Nine Partners Boarding School (1796) Mechanic, New York as well as other schools that had a strong Quaker association in both the United States & in England. Quaker associated motifs & stylized depictions of the main building at Ackworth School, & forms representing the City Gates of York are some of the elements can be seen on this lovely sampler. There are other examples of this distinctive design format known to exist. The maker of this sampler was Margaret Smith, aged nine & dated 1820. Margaret Smith was born in 1811 to Thomas Smith & Margaret Dale of York, England. The verse contained in the original cartouche has disappeared through time, but we have included three different verses for you to select from that would be appropriate. Two of the verses were written by Dr. Isaac Watts & the other written by William Cowper.
