This postcard is part of an ongoing Black History Month series of illustrations. This is Edna Lewis, a chef. & the word “abundance” accompanies her as a reminder to see what we have around us. Its 4"x6" & printed on 80 lb card stock Here is a bit more background about the woman in the illustration: Edna, an incredible cool, chef, & teacher was born in 1916 in “Freetown” Virginia. She began cooking at an early age & throughout her life cooked in restaurants, homes, etc. She moved to NYC is a teen, joined the communist party, began cooking for a restaurant called Cafe Nicholson, & went on to teach many what Southern Cooking was really about, linking back to a history of growing your vegetables, grains, legumes, fruits, etc & harvesting them. She did cook things like fried chicken but as I understood it, they raised their animals & cooked them for special events. Seasonal dishes & foods. Connected to the land. Besides cooking she was a museum lecturer, author of many cook books, & a historian who passed down the story of how what’s known as Southern hospitality or Southern food came from Africans.
