Nearly all sorts of pastoral designs (motifs in Turkish) have been used with this Anatolian kilim (wolf-mouth, ram’s horn, hands-on hips). This residue of ‘basic ’ patterns can be thought of as the ancient core of a design vocabulary, linked to the cognate forms of other weaving peoples through common ancestry or ancient contacts. We can imagine how two branches of a tribe became separated; inevitably they were exposed to different influences. Weavers learned new designs which were added to the old, which in turn were slowly altered & forgotten. After many generations the outward appearance of the weavings of the two groups was completely different, but if their core motifs were identified & compared they would be found to be related through a common structure.
