Dramatic American Encaustic Tile sat on the fireplace of a now destroyed Beverly Hills, Illinois home. That’s right. Beverly Hills, California isn’t the only one in the world with lovely homes. Beverly, as it is known by locals, still has some of the most magnificently designed homes in the Midwest, but some were left in decay & then scavenged. These were scavenged in the late 1950’s from a Beverly / Morgan Park mansion fireplace by the Laviegn family of Beverly. These were then framed in the late 1960’s. This is the wolf & I also offer the ram in another listing in my shop. The tiles are framed & I will not open the back to determine size, but from what I can feel from the mounting, the tile measures 6" square. Interior black matte is a very short nap velvet with a heavy outer stippled & slightly gilded wooden frame. Roughly 10 1/2" square. Back side reveals the shop that did the framing & I do so love the old phone identification of BEVERLY 3-0084. As a child of the rotary phone age, I know exactly what that means. Photos are an accurate depiction of condition. One more thought for those of you who may have been Buffy & the Vampire Slayer devotees or maybe even Angel devotees, these tiles are Wolf, & Ram. Sadly, I have no Hart. American Encaustic Tile was famous for their magnificent tiles that were created in sets to surround fireplaces in arts & crafts & just about any home. AETCO was making tile that far eclipsed anything imported from England at a price most could afford. Founded in 1875 & in business until 1935, AETCO was purchased in 1935 by Shawnee Pottery.
