This antique French plaque in bronze, shows a bucolic scene of a shepherd reclining with his sheep & his large sheepdog at his rear, keeping the ram under control. There are trees surrounding the scene & a dove flies toward the shepherd with a letter for him in its beak. I believe that this has great age but can find no distinguishing marks. I would say that it was an 18th century bronze & it looks to me as if it has been cut from something larger, as there is a rough edge around the plaque. The border has an egg & dart border around the edge of the plaque. It is a classical design & measures 8.5cms long or 3¼" by 18.5 or 7¼" wide. The thickness varies but is approximately 4mms. There is verdigris on the rear of the plaque. It has two tiny holes either side at the top, by which to fix it to something if you wish to mount it. A beautiful salvaged bronze plaque, I believe dating to the 1800’s. This item will be shipped from France.
