This is an antique Japanese cricket cage, a traveling cricket cage. I was told that back in the day Japanese men looped the cord on this cage through a sash or belt so they could have their pet crickets with them the they went out. I have had this beautiful thing for many more years than I can remember. The cage was hand carved from wood in the shape of a persimmon, it has flowers hand carved on it that have been stained red. To put the cricket inside, the top lifts up along the cord & is secured with one of the glass jet beads when closed. The bottom is decorated with two more jet beads & a metallic gold tassel. The only issue I can see with it is there is a teensy little chip to the edge of the wood lid. This is such a treasure.
