The obverse of the coin depicts the helmeted head of Athena in the right profile. The goddess patron & protector of Athens, who was associated with wisdom, handicraft, & warfare. She is wearing a crested Attic helmet decorated with three olive leaves above the visor & a spiral palmette on the bowl. Her hair sweeps across her forehead in two loops of parallel strands & is visible beneath the helmet’s neck guard. She has an archaic smile & a frontal almond-shaped eye. The reverse of the coin depicts the owl of Athena with the inscription AΘE, an abbreviation of AΘΗNAΙΩΝ (the Athenians). in daily use, Athenian drachmas were called glaukes (γλαυκες, owls). The owl has traditionally been associated with wisdom because of its ability to see in the dark, where others may not be able to see. The Athenian tetradrachm was the first successful international coin. They were minted from 510 BCE until at least 42 BCE when the Romans stopped minting the Athenian coins & replaced them for their denarii. Handcrafted in Greece with extra care in 925 sterling silver.
