Dieffenbachia Plant, or Dumb Cane Plant, is an easy to care for, variegated green & white, tropical plant which is native from Mexico to Argentina. This plant features large broad leaves with splashes of variegation that tend to grow at a fast rate. Dieffenbachia is part of the Aroid family & a cousin to Aglaonema, Philodendron, & Spathiphyllum. This means they appreciate humid environments which aid in growing larger & broader leaves. Light Dieffenbachia prefers medium to bright filtered or indirect light. It will tolerate lower light conditions, but at a cost of a slowed growth rate. Avoid direct sun as it can bleach this plants colorful foliage. Water & Soil Establishing a watering regimen is important with this plant as it can be a bit on the picky side. As with all plants, water Dieffenbachia in relation to the light & conditions it is receiving. in general Dieffenbachia likes to dry slightly between watering. To measure moisture levels of the soil simply insert a chopstick along the side of the pot. Do not water unless the top half or more of the chopstick comes out dry. This will aid you in establishing a watering schedule as well as acquaint you with the signals this plant may give when watering is needed (such as slightly droopy leaves). Potting soil that is amended with a bit of peat moss & perlite or vermiculite works well for Dieffenbachia. If you do not want to go to the trouble of mixing your own soil purchase African Violet soil as it typically works great as well. Temperature & Humidity Deiffenbachia prefers room temperatures between 65 degrees F & 85 degrees F. Don’t let temperatures fall below 55 degrees F as this may damage foliage. While this plant typically does well at standard household humidity levels it does prefer higher humidity levels. The occasional misting will be much appreciated. What Else? Dieffenbachia needs occasional grooming, trimming any yellow or brown leaves. Always be sure to do so with a clean, sharp tool as this plant is susceptible to bacteria. When a plant gets to big for an area, or you simply want to grow your Deiffenbachia collection, propagation is easy & fun. You can do so three different ways with this plant: top shoots, stem shoots, & suckers.
