Vermeil refers to high quality (pure or sterling) silver that is plated with a thick layer of real gold. Most vermeil jewelry available now is created by electroplating the silver with real gold, a chemical process that uses an electrical current to bind the two metals together. in order to be considered as true vermeil jewelry in the US, the piece has to meet certain qualifications. For instance, the gold on the piece needs to be at least 2.5 microns thick, & at least 10k or higher. WHAT IS GOLD PLATING? in gold plating, any metal can be used as the base (But we use sterling silver), & the gold layer can be of varying levels of purity. This will result in a variety of thicknesses for the gold coating. Gold plated pieces are cheaper than vermeil jewelry as the gold color is just gold color not real gold to create the core for the plating, which is dipped in gold to form a thin layer of gold plating.
