This specimen has two crystals that are each about 1.5" x 2", one more prominent & one partially covered by a mineral crust. The more exposed one is terminated & is somewhat clear with some inclusion, & both crystals are a soft pink color. The pink color comes from the presence of manganese(II), & without it or another impurity, beryl would be clear. Other noteworthy types of beryl include emerald, heliodor, & aquamarine. The first Morganite crystals were discovered at the turn of the 20th century in Pala, California, & more was subsequently discovered in 1910 off the coast of Madagascar. It was named for mineral-enthusiast & financier J.P. Morgan on the suggestion of famed American mineralogist Frederick Kunz.
