Fun stories for learning to read! Your 4-6 year old child will be reading stories with 3-8 letter words with all five short vowel sounds, blends, and some compound words; words like kickball, and string. This vocabulary focuses on decodable words with rhyming patterns, so your child can continue to build skills in a gradual manner. These stories follow-up the vocabulary from other books by Jane Wilson, Zat and Nat-2 Cats, Can you Dig It?, and Can You Fix It? By the time your child has read these books, he will also have had practice with about half of the two handred most commonly used printed words. While these books do not have illustrations, similar to most chapter books, your child can focus on the process of reading and have a real sense of success. When pictures are used at this stage, children can become dependent on them and memorize the words rather than using the letter/sound relationships that are so critical for building reading skills.
