Yoken’s “Thar She Blows” Portsmouth NH 1947-2004 The famous sign at Yoken’s Restaurant art print is from an original watercolor painting by the Artist, William B. MacGregor Jr., who is known in the New England area as the Junkyard Artist. Yoken’s Restaurant & gift shop opened in 1947 & was a favorite for locals & visitors whenever they were in the Portsmouth NH area. Yoken’s was famous for great family dining & also banquets, weddings, conventions & reunions. Yoken’s featured a huge menu but a emphasis on seafood. YUM After finishing your delicious meal you were given a key for the treasure chest & immediately headed to the gift shop. We never fortunate to have one of the winning keys to open the chest. Maybe you had one of the winning keys? The gift shop was huge with thousands of souvenirs, collectible, cards & Christmas gifts. Yoken’s was easy to find on route 1 by the large whale with the slogan “Thar she blows”. MacGregor, Jr. was born in Medfield, MA in 1947, the son & the grandson of Norfolk Hunt Club kennel masters who also were artists. Bill is a graduate of Medfield High School, Wentworth Institute, & Northeastern University. His engineering career, from which he is now retired, included working for military & aerospace companies in industrial engineering & IR optics. His painting incorporates “old skool” mechanical & civil drafting tools & he uses a mixed medium of watercolors, acrylics & inks. Two rabbits are often in quite a few of his paintings. Look for them. He is frequently commissioned by United States Naval officers to create paintings of their ships & aircraft carriers on nautical charts. in May, 2018, & for one year, four of Bill’s automotive related paintings were on display at the Larz Anderson Auto Museum in Brookline, MA.
